The text emoticon XD represents a laughing face with closed eyes, used in digital messages to show that something is funny. Viewed sideways, the letter X forms squinting eyes squeezed shut with laughter, while the capital D forms a wide smiling mouth.
What XD Means
The primary meaning of XD is genuine amusement. People send it when a joke, meme, or comment makes them chuckle. Because the face depicts eyes squeezed shut with laughter, it conveys stronger humor than a subtle smile.
XD also signals self-deprecating humor. People often add it to messages about personal blunders, sometimes pairing it with expressions like FML to laugh off their bad luck. It can also soften playful teasing, showing that a remark was made in good fun.
Where XD Came From
XD originated as a text emoticon created on computer keyboards before phones supported graphical emoji sets. Because early chat software only handled basic text characters, online communities combined letters sideways to represent facial expressions. The letter X represented closed squinting eyes, while the D formed an open smiling mouth.
The symbol gained wide popularity across internet chatrooms, message boards, and multiplayer computer games during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Gamers especially valued the shortcut because it was fast to type during matches, helping the face spread across early digital culture.
How People Use XD
People place XD at the end of a message to set a casual, cheerful tone. It frequently appears after an awkward moment or unexpected TMI story, turning a blunder into a shared laugh. You can also send it alone as an immediate reaction to a funny video or picture.
Capitalization alters the tone slightly. Standard XD signals clear amusement, while lowercase xD suggests a softer giggle. Typing all lowercase as xd feels more casual, common in competitive gaming chats. Repeating the letter D, as in XDD, shows prolonged laughter.
- I just tripped over my own backpack in the hallway XD
- Wait, did your brother actually believe that story? xD
- I spent twenty minutes looking for my glasses while wearing them XDD
- Good luck on the chemistry test, you will need it xd
- That dog video has no business being that funny XD
How to Reply to XD
Replying to XD is simple because the sender is just sharing a laugh. If someone sends it in response to your message, you do not need any special reply. You can continue the conversation or answer their question normally.
To match their playful mood, respond with a quick laugh like haha, lol, or a laughing emoji. If they used XD after sharing an embarrassing mishap, you can reply with a supportive joke or share a funny blunder of your own.
Similar Terms
Just like many other popular text messaging slang terms, XD has several recognized variants. People often write xD with a lowercase x for a gentler smile, xd in all lowercase for quick gaming chats, or XDD to show amplified laughter.
Several other keyboard emoticons and slang terms share a similar purpose, including the smiling face :D, acronyms like LOL and ROFL, and the squinting laughing emoji 😆.
