3 Tips for Using Immersion Cooling Technology in Bitcoin Mining

Mining for Bitcoin is an energy-intensive process; aside from the cryptocurrency itself, the largest output generated is heat. Many have come up with innovative solutions to mitigate this waste by capturing and reusing it for residential heating and farming, but these are not the only options available. In fact, most people dispose of the heat through immersion cooling systems, in which the mining equipment is directly immersed in a liquid coolant that absorbs the heat. Here is a look at 3 tips for using immersion cooling technology in Bitcoin mining.

1. Avoid Excess Cooling Hardware

Unlike traditional air- and liquid-cooling methods, immersion cooling facilitates superior heat dissipation. By putting the hardware directly into the coolant, the system transfers heat away from the components about as quickly as it produces it, resulting in lower local temperatures and reduced heat waste. Additionally, the sealed environment further protects the equipment by keeping it clean, making maintenance less of a frequent priority. All of that leads to a longer lifespan thanks to the reduced wear and tear.

Not only will cooling reduce waste heat, but it also reduces the overall consumption of a local Bitcoin mining operation. Because you can target a precise temperature to keep the system running, you won’t need to compensate with excess cooling equipment, leading to even greater energy savings.

2. Don’t Forget About Firmware

As important as the immersion cooling hardware itself is, the firmware is an essential part of temperature control. By monitoring the temperature of the coolant that the equipment is submerged in, firmware can make adjustments to ensure the ecosystem remains within an optimal range to prevent overheating and other potential issues that can arise. To that end, firmware can also control the pump and fan speeds to reduce energy consumption wherever possible.

3. Consider Two-Phase Immersion

Many who dip into immersion cooling opt for a single-phase setup with either one or two loops designed to dissipate heat in stages, but there is a third advancement level to consider. With a two-phase approach, miners are first stripped of their fans, heatsinks, and chassis before immersion, exposing the internal components to the coolant and sapping away the heat from them directly. The heat is separated from the liquid before the latter returns to the components.

This type of arrangement is still in its experimental stages, and it’s usually much more expensive. Likewise, because the components are now directly exposed to an environment outside of a chassis, more frequent maintenance may be necessary.

All told, immersion cooling technology is fairly quick and easy for Bitcoin miners to set up, but there are trade-offs to consider as well. It may not be how miners opt to cool in the future, given the increasingly advanced designs produce more and more heat over time, but it is nevertheless a valuable resource available today.
